"Here we are folks, the dream we all dream of"

-Prince, U Got the Look, 1987

The museum opens Sunday June 7 — Prince's birthday — at Roberts Gallery, 2400 Plymouth Ave N, at the corner of Bernadette Anderson Way in North Minneapolis. 40+ artists and stories. Houses of Prince. An afternoon of community, art and music.  Brass Solidarity will join us at 3pm to help us honor and celebrate Prince. Free, and open to all.

Before the museum opens, we have a special gift to announce.

A free walking tour of Prince's North Minneapolis — this Sunday

Historian Kristen Zschomler is offering a free guided tour of the North Minneapolis neighbourhood where Prince grew up, as a birthday celebration for the museum's opening day.

The tour departs from the gallery before the official 2pm opening — walking between Prince's childhood home and that of his cousin Charles "Chazz" Smith, past their neighbourhood schools, through the history of housing covenants that shaped the Northside Prince knew.

This is Kristen's gift to the community. Bookings are essential. Limited to 25.

The museum

The People's Museum for Prince opens June 7 and runs through June 27, Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5pm. Roberts Gallery is the main museum site.

Our satellite exhibition Let's Work! A Labor of Love is at the Capri Theater, 2027 W Broadway Ave N. And we're thrilled to announce our Southside partner: ColorWheel Gallery in South Minneapolis, hosting the satellite exhibition No One in the Whole Universe Can Ever Compare. Owner Tammy Ortegon offers an art-activity-filled Prince celebration day Saturday June 6, noon to 6pm.

All events and exhibitions are free.

If you want to help

Your participation is the best support of the People's Museum. If you'd like to contribute in other ways, donations are open at peoplesmuseumforprince.org/support. This is an unfunded, collective labor of love and we appreciate every contribution.

And — if you happen to be a baker, or know one, or have another way to contribute to the opening reception refreshments, we would love to hear from you. Get in touch at exhibition@peoplesmuseumforprince.org.

In the press

It's been a busy few weeks.

Yesterday, Houses of Prince, our research project, was featured in KARE 11's story on the IC4PS's Prince Symposium Dance On! and the week of celebrations ahead — view here.

Emma Walykta from Lavender Magazine (May 28) wrote a feature on the museum's origins, the community-sourced vision, and the short documentary Dearly Beloved — To: Prince, Dearly Beloved; For: The People.

Jill Boogren from Southwest Voices (May 20) explored why community testimony matters and what draws contributors from around the world to this museum — 10 years later: The People's Museum for Prince gives voice to his fans.

Thank you for your interest and support. I hope to welcome you to the museum on Sunday.
